Forced Modifiers, Up Selling and New Product

Let’s start by making sure we understand what forced modifiers are.  A forced modifier is used when a specialty item is ordered and SP-1 then requires the order taker to pick an ingredient or modifier from a list.

For example, in the picture below, we have a whole garden sandwich ordered.  The forced modifiers in this example is for a side choice. The employee would then be forced to select one of those side choices.

Because you can assign a charge to a forced modifier, this can work as an effective up selling tool.  For example, if I select chips – there is no charge.  Pasta, potato salad or macaroni salad are all items that would have a charge.

There is another use for forced modifiers however.   Introducing a new product or method of preparation to a customer.  In a sense, educating the customer on your store and menu.

In the picture above, we have an example of using this for education in a coffee shop.  In this example the customer asked for a brewed coffee.   The first forced modifier was the type of coffee being used and this is the second forced modifier.  This is a prompt for what the brew method should be.

What we are trying to accomplish here is the is both up selling our customer and also providing a tool to help your staff introduce new items to your customer.

Who handles your credit card processing?

Good question isn’t it? There are many payment processors to choose from. If you’re not sure which company is the best for you, we can help! SelbySoft has some preferred relationships with credit card processors that can save you money and help streamline your business operations.

One of our relationships is with Mercury Payment Systems®.  Mercury® offers several  advantages that make them a great choice for our customers and a great partner for SelbySoft. Here are some of the reasons Mercury is one of our preferred processors:

Customer Service. This is the most important thing we consider when evaluating partners, since it matters most to our customers.  Mercury offers free, live customer and technical support, 24/7. They have shown a dedication to customer service that has helped our merchants maintain a reliable credit card processing system.

Mercury Stand-In. This service is unique to Mercury.  If there is an outage within the authorization network, Mercury implements their stand-in service that allows merchants to continue credit cardprocessing. Mercury “stands in” so business continues as usual for our merchants.

Direct Integration. SelbySoft and Mercury have a direct integration which  eliminates the need for a third party system like PC Charge. A direct integration helps cut future costs since no updates or support are required., Gift Cards. Mercury has a cross-store gift card program that supports pooling of gift card funds – ideal for merchants with franchises or multiple locations. Mercury also offers their customers free, unlimited gift card transactions.

Lastly, Mercury can be very competitive with their rates. They also offer month-to-month contracts for merchants who prefer less commitment with a payment processor.

I invite you to find out more about Mercury Payment Systems online at www.mercurypay.com

How do you handle delivery?

For those of you that offer delivery service, you have had some big questions you had to address.   It seems like such a simple situation when you open a store but delivery is actually a very complex affair.
SelbySoft has some solutions for you however!  Today we will talk about the different ways that stores charge customers for delivery.
Most of our delivery customers choose to have a minimum delivery amount.  With SP-1 this can be based on the ticket or a menu group.  An example of the ticket amount would be that you may want a total ticket dollar amount of $10.00 in order to deliver.  An example of the menu group would be to only deliver if they order $10 of pizza, regardless of how much they order otherwise.  This stops the an employee from taking a salad delivery only.
Once a minimum charge is setup, you can choose to allow the customer to pay the difference between the minimum and the ticket total in order to meet the requirement!  For example, if a customer buys $8.00 of product, then SP-1 will add $2.00 to the ticket to meet the $10.00 minimum.  You can also add an option for overriding the additional charge if needed.
If the customer meets the minimum delivery requirements, then we get into what and how do we charge them?
With SP-1 you have four main methods of doing this. . .
Per ticket – With this you can add a charge per ticket for the delivery.  For example -$2.00 per delivery.
Per item – A little more complex.  In this method, you are charging based on the menu item and / or the order type.  So, if a customer orders 1 pizza for delivery, you may charge $1.00, 2 pizzas, $1.00, 3 or more would be $3.00 for the charge.  This can be used for a variety of different charges as well.   There is another method of doing this as well by using the accumulation switch.  With that turned on, the per item charge is accumulated.
Street Names:  With this activated, you can set a delivery address based on the specific street a customer lives on.
Map:  With this optional software, you can setup a delivery based on the range.  So under 1 mile is free, 2 miles out and more is $2.50
All of these options allow for delivery charges based on the time of day or day of the week as well!

Have you ordered gift cards?

Typically the holiday season is the busiest time for gift card sales to your customer.  How is your stock?  Are you prepared?

Every year we have customers that order gift cards at the last minute, hoping that they will be printed by Christmas.

Don’t let this happen to you!  Most of the gift card companies that are out there have a couple week turnaround time from receipt of artwork to shipping of the cards.

Here are some of the other blogs on gift cards for more information!

Curious about gift card usage?

We all know that gift cards are a great way of increasing revenue and customer retention.  One of the questions that comes up is how to track what happened with a gift card.   Usually this comes up because a customer thinks they should have more money on their card than they actually do.

SelbySoft has a great report that will show you a complete history of the gift card when you are using our free internal gift card system.

In Reports | Customer | Internal Gift Card System you will find an option that provides a couple different types of information.

For example, to see all the transaction history for a specific card, you would simply select the Individual button and then enter the gift card number and dates to see.    The example below shows what type of information is being displayed – notice that all voids, loads, sales etc are shown along with the date and the employee that performed the transaction!

This is a great way to check if someone has used a card incorrectly and to help verify transactions.

Another report that can be run here is the list of outstanding cards.  With this report you will see a total list of all gift cards that have not had any use since a certain date.  This is a great liability report!

QR Codes

Do you know what a QR code is?  It’s that funny little black and white square barcode that you see on some products.  Manufacturers and retailers have started using them over the last few years as a way to look up product information.  It is designed as an advanced barcode that stores more information than the traditional UPC style barcodes that you see.  The beauty of the QR code is that it can store actual information like web addresses.

One of the great things about a QR code is that you can place it on products and quickly direct customers to a website about that product.  These codes become very effective with smartphone users.   If you have a smartphone, you can scan them and be directed to a website automatically.  Instant information.

At the bottom of this Blog are three examples for you to try – If you have an app on your phone that does QR codes, scanning these barcodes will automatically take you to http://www.selbysoft.com/, my Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/SelbySoft) or the SelbySoft Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/SelbySoftinc) where you can also become a fan!

So, what does this mean for you?  Powerful marketing and tracking capabilities as well as the ability to direct your techno-savvy customers.

Some of you already know that we have the ability to print a custom coupon or offer at the bottom of the receipt.  Want to send people to your web store or online ordering site?  Add a QR code!

This is a great way to both communicate with and market to your customers.  Utilizing this, you can drive trafffic to a web site or Facebook page quickly.  If you setup  a unique pagelink, you can even then judge traffic to the site by seeing how many visits came to that page directly.

Really want to get creative? Once a customer scans a QR code, they are taken to a sign-up or registration page.  Once the customer provides their information, email them a coupon!

Creating a QR code?  There are a number of online sites that allow you to create this.  I used http://createqrcode.appspot.com/ to create the ones in this email.  I then simply pasted the image here.

How to cut costs?

In today’s world we are seeing costs on items continue to rise. Our coffee and specialty beverage customers have been hit with costs of coffee increasing  to it’s highest levels in 13 years.
http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/2010-09-08-coffee-prices_N.htm?csp=obinsite
Our pizza and restaurant customers don’t have it any better as we have seen cheese prices up as much as 25% over the last year (http://www.pizzamarketplace.com/article/177010/Commodities-Cheese-up-25-percent-this-year
So, what does this have to do with POS?  A LOT.  When costs skyrocket, mistakes and control become even more important.
Take the first step by implementing controls over mistakes of pricing and product.  A Zero Training POS system allows you to make sure your employees are doing their best to get correct prices out to your customers.  This eliminates the shortages that occur when employees are quoting wrong prices.  Even a few cents off can make the differences when costs are involved!
Tracking your inventory?  If not, then you are probably not tracking your waste either.  Even just tracking waste on a couple of your key items will help you save money and help you cut your costs.
Implementing a full inventory control system takes it a step further by showing you your cost of goods sold (COGS) on the fly.  Portion control can be managed by having precise portions printed in the kitchen.  This allows your employees to stop the overages of food that cause a waste and inventory issue.
So give it a shot – call us and ask how we can help you at least trim your costs and get better control over your location.

Do you have retail?

If so, we have options!  SP-1 has the ability to handle your retail, barcodes and weighing items if needed.  This goes beyond the simple candy bar sale.  We are talking full capabilities of selling retail items in your location.
It all starts with our SP-1 Inventory & Retail Management Solution.  With this, SP-1 allows you to enter retail items, bundle items together into build groups and really take control of how retail is handled in your location.
It starts with our Retail Master File!  We have the ability to track the category assigned, retail price, stock levels, and more. UPC codes can be assigned to the retail item for quick barcode capabilities.
You can even print custom barcodes from here for you retail items that may not come with a UPC!
It’s our experience that often you may need to bundle one or more retail items together.  Gift baskets are a common thing in retail locations.  With our Build Groups you will be able to quickly add all the items to the build group.  Now whenever the gift basket is sold, all the retail items within it are removed from inventory as well!
Don’t forget that in order to sell an item, you simply need to scan it in Order Entry.  If you have an item that is sold by weight, we can handle that with an integrated electronic scale.  Once you scan or enter the item, you will be able to have the amounts read automatically from the scale!

Miscellaneous Charge
Do you ever run into into situations where you need to charge someone but don’t have a menu item programmed?
SP-1 has a Miscellaneous Charge button that allows you to handle this!  In Order Entry, select the Miscellaneous Charge button and the above screen pops up.

You can change the description on the fly so it reflects what was added as a charge.  Enter the amount and you are done.
As usual, there are many other options involved with this:
  •  In System Setup | Operations:3 you can default the description of the Miscellaneous Charge to something other than “Misc. Charge”.  You can even setup if tax should be added to this based on the order type (Delivery, Dine In, Carry Out, Pick Up).
  • You can also decide if discounts will apply to Miscellaneous Charges.  This can be setup in Master Files | Discounts.
  • Of course we report on all of this as well!  Miscellaneous charges are reported in detail in Reports | Daily Sales | Business Summary.   If you want to get more specific, you can run the Reports | Ticket History | Misc. Charge report (shown below).
